Citizens!
performance, video, prints, 2024
“Citizens!” is a series of performances and posters that establishes a dialog with a work by a Danish art group Superflex — ”Foreigners, please don’t leave us alone with the Danes!”. In 2002, posters with these words were put up in the streets of Copenhagen as a comment on the increasingly reactionary immigration politics in Denmark. During the Danish EU Presidency in 2002, Denmark’s immigration policies also became a point of interest and discussion in the international press.
“Citizens!” and ”Citizens, please don’t leave us alone with the Death!” are an attempt to establish a dialog with the imaginary citizens, that could have been the authors of the first, original message. In the wake of the European parliamentary and US presidential elections, unlike the Superflex’s art piece, the new word play strongly points to the citizens’ responsibility in the ongoing war atrocities that take place outside of the European Union.
“Citizens!” performance highlights the current tendencies of modern warfare that becomes cheaper and more accessible. The accessibility of the arms increases the proximity to it, and the distance between war and non-war zones becomes very vague, blurry and symbolic.
